A Northern Province livestock owner was granted bail by the Kayts Magistrate for allegedly branding his cows, an offence under the country’s Animal Welfare laws. However, the case filed against him by the Saiva Maha Sabha, a pro-Hindu outfit will continue.

Branding is an old practice where the initials or name of livestock owners were marked on the animals with a hot metal rod to identify ownership. It was banned in 2013, and is now a punishable offence by law.

The petitioners had brought the matter to the Kayts Police who had prosecuted the owner. The Kayts Magistrate granted Rs 50,000 worth personal bail for the suspect, and the case was postponed for February 11.

The Saiva Maha Sabha is engaged in grassroots campaigns against animal cruelty including illegal castration practices carried out on livestock.
