The first research symposium by undergraduate students attached to the Arts Faculty of University of Jaffna is scheduled to begin tomorrow at the Kailasapathy auditorium of the university, a member of the Organising Committee said.

The symposium titled “Humanities and Social Sciences for Equality, Justice and Development” will see some 1000 research papers being submitted by the students who graduated last year.

Considering the current situation prevailing in the country, the event will be live-streamed through social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, the committee member said.

The sessions will be focused on the following topics: Law and Order, Religion and Philosophical Inquiry, Language, Literature and Art, State, Governance and Media, Environment, Economy, Policy Planning and Development, History, Heritage and Cultural Diversity, Society, Community Participation and Social work and Health and Well-being. The head of the Arts Faculty will preside the sessions while the university’s Vice-Chancellor S. Srisatkunarajah will take part as chief guest.

Keynote addresses at the inauguration day of the symposium will be delivered by former University of Peradeniya Faculty of Arts Head Prof. V Maheswaran, and Dr. S. I. Keethaponcalan, Chair of the Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution Department at Salisbury University in Maryland. Prof. Shanthi Sekarajasingham of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Colombo and S. Jeyasankar, Senior Lecturer of Fine Arts at the Eastern University.

The organising committee said the main reason for organising this symposium is to give a platform to share the research papers and findings of the research carried out by around 400 university students on 26 subjects every academic year.

“Even though a significant number of research studies are being carried out by students every year, a handful number of them are published in journals or in research publications. To become responsible graduates, the students need to develop their research skills on contemporary topics and share them with society. This symposium will be the first step towards that purpose,” the committee said in a statement.

Any interested individuals can take part in the sessions. Particularly, the sessions will be beneficial to school students who are pursuing arts, media and fine arts to get an idea of their future goals and explore possibilities in their respective subjects, the committee member said.
