In their Christmas messages, the President, Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and the Speaker of Parliament all noted how Christmas brings joy and hope for all humankind. They urged  people to be mindful of celebrating Christmas adhering to health guidelines in view of the continued threat from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The spiritual essence of Christmas is the redemption of all by serving for the good of the society. Christianity shows the way for a lifestyle of goodness liberated from the darkness of sin by eliminating misconceptions through noble teachings such as peace, kindness and love. The Lord Jesus Christ places great value in letting mankind truly experience the love of God in their lives by living in compassion and love towards each other and helping the oppressed brothers and sisters in society,” President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in his Christmas message.

“During nearly two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the spiritual imagination and the discipline inculcated in us by our religions have been instrumental in controlling the pandemic on an individual, social and national level,” President Rajapaksa said.

Lord Jesus Christ devoted his entire life towards bringing freedom to oppresed people and creating a better society on earth, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said in his message.

“It is up to you to give meaning to this Christmas in a way that raises new hope for a world that has been ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Prime Minister said.

“It is essential for people of all nations to celebrate the dawn of Christmas following the example of love and mercy that the Lord Jesus brought to the world. The day of Christmas immensely drives us to get rid of bad thoughts which bring suffering and to be loving citizens by realising the true essence of Christmas,” Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in his message.

“While the ongoing COVID-19 situation has restricted people in their usual Christmas celebrations, the teachings of Jesus are based on patience, unwavering devotion, love, and faith in one another,” Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said in his message.

“By continuing to have boundless love and patience for all human beings in such difficult times, we will be convinced that Christianity is the doctrine of grace. Jesus Christ, with the promise to walk with us always, will be walking with us through this evil calamity,” he added.
