Sri Lanka managed to clinch three top slots in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Indices published in their latest report.

In the ITU affordability index, Sri Lanka ranks at the 20th position for cheapest broadband end 13th for mobile broadband while clinching a top position at the 7th place for voice mobile services.   “Two years of concerted efforts of making affordable offerings through E-Thaksalawa, LEARN End other unlimited packages for working from home have made this possible. This is a milestone,” Oshada Senanayake, Chairman Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRC) told the Business Times on Thursday. ITU is the official source for global ICT data and statistics, including ICT price data. ITU has the responsibility for the global collection and reporting of official telecommunication statistics as well as statistics for ICT household access and individual ICT use within the UN system.

The price of telecommunication and Internet services is regularly cited as one of the major barriers to Internet access and use.

Mr. Senanayake noted that a stable tax structure is of paramount importance for affordability to catch on. “During the last two years this tax structure has been pragmatic. The 0-tax regiment on ICT and IT needs to go on” enabling rural infrastructure by incentivising and empowering the telecommunications sector will get the country into higher affordability standards, he added.  He said the next step is to get to the top 10 rank of data affordability in the ITU indices. He noted that Sri Lanka remains optimistic in the middle of its post-COVID-19 economic recovery, given its rather developed digital landscape with more than 60 per cent of the population owning mobile phones (about half of them advanced digital smartphones) and a significant number accessing Internet on a regular basis.

Globally, prices for voice and data services have been falling over the last decade, in line with growing competition and strong increases in subscriber rates and usage.
