Millions of rupees are to be spent on the long stretch of the Muruthana – Bambukuliya Road currently in construction, according to the giant board displayed on the road by the Western Province Road Development Authority (RDA).

However, no one seems to be taking any responsibility to repair the main entrance to the village on the right side of the Maha Oya Bridge, opened by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe three years ago.

At the entrance of the village, around two feet of water collects on rainy days and vehicles, especially motor cycles, are put at risk. Even pedestrians travel on such rainy days with the greatest difficulty, as the water is sometimes up to their knees.

Some residents from the villagers have placed tyres to warn passersby of the deep holes, and they complain that authorities should have raised the level of the enrance road by at least three feet.

They had also complained about the construction of the road from Muruthana – Bambukuliya. They said, at certain places bulldozers were being used to remove soil on either side of the road, and the construction workers involved had said this was being done to widen the road. But the residents said the concrete pavements near the houses of some powerful people, were left untouched.

These residents asked why the authorities could not use the large quantities of soil removed to repair the patch of road at the entrance of their village, as this had been a ‘death trap’ for several years.
