Garbage heap disaster looms

The Karadiyana garbage dump has reached its maximum capacity, the National Building Research Organisation warned.

Garbage collected from areas like Moratuwa, Boralesgamuwa and Kesbewa have been disposed off here despite previous warnings that the capacity has been exceeded.

Executive Director, Waste Management Authority (WP), Nalin Mannapperuma said a red notice had been issued after the area was inspected by the NBRO.

Proposals have been considered to rehabilitate the dumping site while the Karadiyana B section needed to halt further dumping. 15 families are supposed to be affected due to these arrangements and the people need to be relocated.

Senior Lecturer, Peradeniya University, Dr Anuruddha Karunaratne said that at any time a landslide could occur at Karadiyana. The dangers could be multiple as the Bolgoda channel is located in close proximity to the garbage mountain. This could led to an environmental catastrophe. With the accelerated bad weather, the danger could be enormous.
