Arts amidst pandemic

Goethe Institute in Colombo has organised a workshop titled ‘Artistic Freedom & Mobility: Learnings from the Pandemic’ to go online from September 9.

Session 1- a panel debate on ‘Artistic freedom and international exchange beyond Covid-19’ will be held from 2  pm to 3.30 pm while  the session 2: Workshop: ‘Findings and recommendations on how to maintain spaces of artistic freedom beyond the Covid crisis’ will be from
4pm – 5:30pm.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the creative and cultural sectors hard and restricted the mobility and opportunities of artistes worldwide. What did we learn from the pandemic about how to support artistes and cultural activists in situations of political, social and economic threat? The panel will include Khaled Barakeh (artist, cultural activist and founder of coculture e.V.), Manmeet Kaur (MC and rap pioneer from India) and António Pedro Mendes (project coordinator at the Berlin art space SAVVY Contemporary).

The workshop (limited to max. 30 participants) aims to discuss the interim findings of MRI´s ongoing research project on artistic freedom and mobility with a focus on Turkey and the Middle East. Participants include Pelin Çakır (researcher of the MRI study) and Dr Ezgi Bakçay (researcher and curator and co-director of Karşı Sanat).

Welcoming address is by Claudia Roth (Vice-President of the German Bundestag) while the facilitators are Dr. Lisa Bogerts (MRI research coordinator) and Maik Müller (head of MRI).
