COVID-19 death toll exceeds 7000

The death toll due to COVID-19 in Sri Lanka exceeded the 7000 figure last night with 198 more deaths reported, the Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena said.

This week alone more than 1000 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported raising the total to 7,183 last night.
Throughout the week, deaths from the virus saw a gradual increase from 167 on Monday followed by 171 on Tuesday , 170 on Wednesday, 186 on Thursday and 195 on Friday.

In addition more than 15,000 people were tested positive for Coronavirus throughout the week. The highest was reported yesterday with 3884 COVID positive cases. More than 380,000 Sri Lankans have contracted the virus since last year.
At present about 55,000 are being treated in hospitals and intermediate treatment centres.
