CAA introduces hefty fines for violators

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is to introduce hefty fines for those who violate the directives issued by them. Fines start from Rs 100,000 for individuals and up to five million for corporate companies.

According to a bill published by the Ministry of Trade amending Section 60 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No.9 of 2003, anyone who failed or refused to comply with the CAA directives would be tried in Magistrate’s Court where they would be fined from Rs 100,000 to 500,000, or six months imprisonment for the first offense. If the person commits a subsequent offense, he would be fined from Rs 250,000 to one million, or face a one-year jail term.

For the corporates and companies, an initial fine for the first offense starts from Rs 500,000 up to five million and for a subsequent offense, the penalty goes from one million to ten million rupees.
