The Golfers’ Guild of Royal and S. Thomas’ colleges made a timely and worthy contribution coinciding the annual Fred de Saram Trophy Royal-Thomian Golf Competition, to the Kothalawela Defence University (KDU).

The annual Fred de Saram Trophy golf competition was played recently, prior to the previous lockdown, and attracted over 80 old boys from both schools.

Unlike previous years, the recently concluded tournament was conducted on a specific and focused concept in the styling of ‘Play golf for a purpose’ and the motive being to raise funds for charity. In line with this, the Royal-Thomian Golfers’ Guild initiated within a short period of time to raise donations and sponsorship funds that could be provided to a project directly connected with COVID-19 pandemic eradication programme.

With the concept being put in place, it was decided by the golfers that the donation of an Optiflow Nasal Oxygen Therapy machine to be made to KDU, on the recommendation made by the College of Anesthesiologists and Intensivists.

The Charity Committee, under the chairmanship of Tyeab Akbarally and the three dedicated members representing the Membership Guild, namely Shiran de Soysa, Suresh Subramaniam and Anil Amarasuriya, took up a proposal made by Brigadier Thamasi Makuloluwa, the President of the College of Anesthesiologists and Intensivists.

The proposal itself entails the donation of the above equipment to KDU, as this equipment is an urgent requirement in view of the critical conditions faced by them, to treat their critical patients.

The presentation was held at the College of Anesthesiologists and Intensivists premises and the following in the presence of Brigadier Professor (Mrs) Thamasi Makuloluwa, Dr. Mrs Chamila Liyanage, Secretary, Dr. Gayan Mendis, representing the KDU Hospital. The Royal-Thomian Golfers’ Guild was represented by Shiran de Soysa, Anil Amarasuriya, Niomal Ranasinghe and Suresh Subramaniam.

The Royal-Thomian Golfers’ Guild appreciated all concerned in ensuring the success of this project, which made the 51-year-old golf competition, more meaningful.
