Asela Sampath gets bail, mulls FR case against police

Consumer rights advocate Asela Sampath was released on bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Mr Sampath told the Sunday Times that his son and wife had been  assaulted during his arrest and alleged that the Piliyandala Police  refused to record a complaint made by his family in this regard. He said  he hoped to file a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court  over the incident.

Mr Sampath, who is also the National Organiser of the Foundation for People’s Rights Protection, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Friday night. Earlier his family said he had been abducted by a group of men in civvies.Police, however, said the suspect had been arrested over a complaint made by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority after he had posted a social media video on the controversy over the second dose of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine.
