University of Vavuniya to be declared open on August 01
View(s):The Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna has been declared as the University of Vavuniya by the Education Ministry.
Issuing an Extraordinary Gazette under the Universities Act, Education Minister G. L. Peiris said after consulting with the University Grants Commission (UGC) it has been decided to establish the University of Vavuniya with effect from August 01 this year.
On July 31 the Education Minister will revoke the gazette issued in 1997 establishing the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna.
The University of Vavuniya will mainly focus on developing higher education in Business Studies, Applied Science and Technology Studies.
The University will comprise three faculties for business studies, applied science and technological studies and ten departments for finance and accountancy, English language teaching, project management, human resources management, marketing management, business economics, management and entrepreneurship, information and communication technology, physical sciences and bio-science.
The location of the university will come within the administrative district of Vavuniya.
“The university shall place greater emphasis on educating students by creating value within the local resource base,” the Education Minister said. -NF
