Re-opening of campuses postponed: UGC

Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle has appointed a committee to decide on the re-opening of the universities.

The committee comprises a representative from each state university.

UGC Chairman Sampath Amaratunge said even though the universities were due to reopen soon, they could not re-open due to the current COVID situation.

Therefore the committee will decide on how the universities should re-opened.

He said the administrators will strictly go by the recommendations of the committee as the situation in each of the campuses will vary.

“In some campuses hostel facilities differ from the others and therefore a different decision may have to be taken,” the Chairman said.

He said the guidelines may change from university to university.

Prof. Amaratunge said after the committee submits its recommendations they would also consult the specialist on virology at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura before taking a final decision.

Universities which were closed last year have not resumed functions since then. The committee appointed is due to meet next week, and will meet regularly thereafter.

Prof. Amaratunge said until the recommendations are received and they are able to open universities, online lectures and exams will continue in the same manner they have been conducted so far.
