Hantane farmers hit by peacock menace

View(s):

Hantane farmers are complaining that their crops were being damaged by hundreds of peacocks that had taken refuge in the area after being chased out from their habitat near a devale.

At Uduwela in the foothills of the Hantane range, farmers say the peacocks were perched on tree tops and when there was no human presence in the fields, they caused damage to the paddy and vegetable plants.

They say some time ago, a few peacocks were driven away from their habitat near the devale close to Uduwela on the Kandy-Galtenna road and they had since multiplied and were causing damage to crops.

The farmers say they complained to the Wildlife Department urging it to relocate the peacocks in a forest area, but little or nothing had happened.
