The Education Ministry is planning to introduce three degree programmes aimed at producing better qualified teachers to serve in the primary section of schools.

Accordingly a programme to enlist around 1,500 students for these degree programmes based on the 2020 G.C.E.(A/L) results will be introduced from next year,  Education Reforms, Open Universities and Distance Learning Promotion State Ministry Secretary Upali Sedera said.

These degree programmes would be three Bachelor of Arts Programmes, namely the BA Primary, BA Junior secondary and BA Senior Secondary.

Dr Sedera said priority would be given for students who had passed Science, Maths and English.

The degree programme had been prepared in consultation with the National Institute of Education and the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) approval would be sought soon, he said.

He also said so far there had not been any programmes focusing on improving the education standard of primary school teachers, and most teachers currently in schools only had teaching diplomas.
