Much-awaited Season 2 of ‘Brain Busters with SLIIT’ TV School Quiz Competition commences

The much awaited Season 2 of SLIIT’s novel quiz competition ‘Brain Busters with SLIIT’ have begun telecasts via TV1 Television Channel on every Saturday at 6.30 pm, with the participation of schoolchildren from government, private and international schools island wide.

‘Brain Busters with SLIIT’ was developed and organised by SLIIT, as an unique and innovative general knowledge quiz competition to engage schoolchildren while cultivating and improving their reading skills and knowledge of current events.

The contestants for Season 2 of TV rounds have been selected from 3000 student participants from over 100 schools based on preliminary rounds conducted in Schools Island wide including Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, Matara, Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla held during June to August 2019.  Students between the ages 15 to 20 were eligible to compete. All participants of the preliminary rounds received a participatory certificate.

Commenting on this year’s competition, Prof. Lalith Gamage, Vice Chancellor/CEO, SLIIT said, “As we begin Season 2 of the much-awaited ‘Brain Busters with SLIIT’ programme designed to enhance the knowledge of young minds, we are pleased to note that this year over 3000  students across the island entered the preliminary rounds.

We believe this programme inspires and encourages contestants to become holistic individuals as well as contributing towards their personal, intellectual and academic growth. Furthermore, as the Brain Busters programme is aired on national TV, it provides an overall opportunity for the viewing audience to advance their knowledge too.”

Upon conclusion of the initial rounds, 27 of the highest scoring schools were selected for the TV rounds. Each school is represented by the highest scoring student. SLIIT conducted a Motivational Workshop for all selected students, their parents and teachers at the SLIIT Campus in Malabe prior to the commencing the TV rounds.

Uditha Gamage, Director, Development and Engineering Services, SLIIT noted, “After the successful conclusion of the first season of ‘Brain Busters with SLIIT’ which was successful in fostering an interest among students that knowledge matters, we received many requests from schools, parents and students to continue the competition.

Thus, for the second consecutive year we have organised this competition and believe participants have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the preliminary rounds. Additionally as the competition progresses, we are able to showcase these bright minds.”

Commenting on the programme Asangi Jayasinghe, Project Chair, Brain Busters with SLIIT and Senior Manager – Business Development, SLIIT, said, ”Despite a challenging 2019, when we visited the schools, we received an overwhelming response and support from the principals/schools teachers who understood the value and benefit the competition bring to their students. Despite tight security concerns in the schools at that time all keys schools in the country allowed us to conduct the preliminary round tests in each of these schools.

In our Motivational sessions which we conducted in each school simultaneously, we continuously highlighted ways to broaden the students’ knowledge in a global context. Through this project we are also able to showcase success stories of Sri Lankans in the global arena and motivate schoolchildren to further their goals and transform in to similar accomplished global citizens.”

A range of attractive prizes await the winning teams and the schools they represent. All preliminary round participants received participatory certificates.

At the Semi Finals all participants receive a cash bonanza equivalent to their score. Winners of each episode will also receive a medal and certificate.

Also in each episode the teachers of these schools were appreciated as they were behind the success of these students.

At the Grand Finale, all participants will receive the cash equivalent to their score, a trophy and certificate, while the three finalist schools will receive a Rs. 100,000/-, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 cash prizes respectively.
