Sri Lanka has leaped five places in the World Baseball ranking released Friday and currently sits in 36th place.

In the latest world rankings for 2020 released by the World Baseball Softball Confederation, Sri Lanka has reaped rewards after a highly successful 2019.

The Sri Lanka national team received 50 points for winning the West Asia Baseball Cup which was held in July last year. They beat the much fancied Pakistan to retain the West Asia Baseball Cup crown which they won in 2017.

This win paved the way for Sri Lanka to participate in the Asian Baseball tournament which was held in Taiwan. Sri Lanka faced the likes of Japan and Chinese Taipei. The Lankans comprehensively beat Pakistan 10-1 in the consolation round games, getting the better out of Pakistan for the second time in one calendar year.

This meant Sri Lanka finished in seventh place in the Asian Baseball tournament, gaining 27 points and a total of 77 in 2019, beginning 2020 in 35th place. The points accumulated in 2019 also helped Sri Lanka climb above Indonesia into eighth place in Asia.

With these new rankings, Sri Lanka now automatically qualifies for the Under 12 and 18 tournaments which are scheduled to be played this year.
