The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has begun to remodel services following the recent unannounced visit by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to the Werahera office.

The President has instructed officials to streamline services within six months.

The Minister of Transport, Mahinda Amaraweera, told the Sunday Times, that short, medium, and long-term plans have been drawn to improve efficiency.

“We have already increased the number of counters by hiring 35 unemployed graduates and hope to hire more,” he said.

An e-monitoring system has been proposed to maintain a database and abandon outdated paper files.

The minister said that following talks with the Secretary of the Ministry of Health, public hospitals will issue the required medical report for a driver’s licence.

“The medical facility at the the DMT office will remain, but by linking government hospitals it will be more efficient and convenient,” he said.

According to Mr Amaraweera, in less than a month this process will be introduced.

Moreover, the DMT said that an SMS alert will be available next month to remind people of collecting times.
