The Government has appointed an “Education Task Force” to implement its proposed new education reforms.

The Education Ministry said the new task force was appointed by Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma based on a recommendation by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The task force was also approved by Cabinet. The 12 member task force is headed by Dr. M. Upali Sedara and comprises experts in various fields including education, health and media.

The task force is entrusted with a range of duties: formulating programmes to implement proposed education reforms, identifying plans and ways to put them into practice, inter-agency coordination, regulation and providing feedback.

Their first priority will be to submit a recommendation to the Government on the best ways to move ahead with its education reform agenda.

This agenda includes the prevention of the shutting down of rural schools, providing such schools with technology facilities, building 20 trilingual schools at district level, reforming the education administration sector and increasing the number of national schools to 1000, the Education Ministry said.   -SJ
