Lakshman Kadirgamar journalism scholar leaves for India for MASCOM study course

Mandira Wijerathne of the Sunday Observer, the winner of the 2018 Denzil Peiris Young Reporter of the Year Award presented at the annual Journalism Awards for Excellence progarmme, left for India this week to study at MASCOM, one of India’s leading journalism academies, as the ninth Lakshman Kadirgamar scholar.

Ms. Wijerathne, a resident of Badulla, will follow the diploma course at MASCOM under the tutelage of the well known Indian academic, Prof. Thomas Oomen.

The Lakshman Kadirgamar Scholarship is offered each year to a young Sri Lankan journalist by MASCOM owners, Malayala Manorama in memory of the late Sri Lankan Foreign Minister. The Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation is a key sponsor of the scholarship.

The other sponsors of the scholarship are the Sri Lankan Press Institute, the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka, which jointly partner the annual Journalism Awards for Excellence programme, now in its 20th year, and SriLankan Airlines which provides the air ticket for the scholar.
