The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce, lent its voice to the plethora of congratulations to new President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

On behalf of the chamber, the President Chathuri Ranasinghe said in a statement: “We are committed to support your mandated agenda in providing a steady, yet rapid, well-structured growth plan for our nation. As the premier organisation representing women entrepreneurs and professionals in Sri Lanka we believe your plans will include this important segment. Empowering females to thrive in their multiple roles and yet be a main contributor to the economy as an entrepreneur is a key deliverable we focus on. In a country which consists of 51.7 per cent females, encouraging them to play an active role in the economy should be a major drive. Currently the female participation in the workforce is limited to just 32 per cent.

We believe your future plans will support increasing this number by helping us to provide them the resources to accept this challenge. A woman creates the foundation of a home; she should be able to extend her skills and competencies to the community and the nation. She has to be recognised for her capabilities without any gender bias.”
