Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges yesterday kept away from a controversial fund-raising campaign organised by the Attorney General’s Department at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo.

The Sunday Times learns that the judges who were formerly invited for the event excused themselves giving different reasons over their inability to attend the event which was meant to coincide with the 135th anniversary of the AG’s Department.

The participation of some of those currently having pending cases before courts was one of the concerns of the senior judges, the Sunday Times learns.
The Chinese Embassy was the Platinum Sponsor for the fundraiser with some Chinese companies having reserved tables.

Another concern raised was that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had been invited as the chief guest of the event during the period of an election.
The event titled ‘A Ray of Hope’, organisers said was being held to raise funds for the education of children who lost their parents in the Easter Sunday bomb attacks. The Department was also accepting donations.
