The Sri Lanka Cancer Society Op Shop celebrates its first anniversary with a grand sale on September 6 from 10.30 a.m. onwards at the Sri Lanka Cancer Society, 37/25 Bullers Lane, Colombo 7.

Starting at 8.30 a.m., the sale will also have a breakfast morning with a Sri Lankan breakfast menu of milk rice, roti, string hoppers, green gram, pittu, manioc and roast paan with curries served for Rs.750 per head.

The Op Shop opened by the Public Education Committee of the Sri Lanka Cancer Society is not just a charity shop to aid cancer patients but also a platform to create public awareness on prevention and early detection of cancer. The shop distributes leaflets and informative material educating people on cancer. They also conduct free screening for blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI.

“During my visits to the UK, USA and Australia, I witnessed these charity shops and realised it’s a well known concept internationally. Then I thought why not open one here,” said Indrani Nanayakkara, founder of the Op Shop.

“We have things to suit everybody’s  pockets, even priced from Rs.50,” noted Indrani. All sale items displayed at the shop are donations given by generous well-wishers who want to help the cause.

Op Shop: Not just a charity shop to aid cancer patients but also a platform to create public awareness

The Sri Lanka Cancer Society, a member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is conducting services, projects and programmes for the welfare of cancer patients and their families. The hospice managed by the society provides residential care for terminally ill patients and the homes offer board and lodging facilities for patients coming to Colombo for cancer treatment from remote areas.

“Cancer patients who are from poor families are financially helpless and even their families can’t afford to treat them with prescribed medicine and food. Through the Op Shop we try to provide for them as much as we can,” said Indrani.

The grand sale will have miscellaneous goods at attractive discounts and all proceeds go to the Cancer Society’s Cancer Patients Welfare Fund.

The Op Shop is open every Friday from 10.30p.m to 2.30 p.m for which the donations are accepted on any working day at the Sri Lanka Cancer Society. For further details call 0112585879.
