The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will soon have a new flying squad headed by a retired military officer. It will also include former members of the security forces.

Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake on Friday moved a resolution to set up the flying squad after she found that the existing one set up under an Assistant Director in the Council had failed to carry out its duties.

The new unit will function under the Municipal Commissioner. In addition to carrying out inspections, the squad’s duties would include keeping a check on the performance of municipal council employees. Some of them mark their arrival time and then return home or engage in other jobs, it was pointed out at the Council meeting.

It was also pointed that at the Madampitiya Public cemetery to which 23 CMC labourers had been assigned there was only one labourer in attendance on August 23 and he had to see to five burials.

Supporting the motion, Councillor Roy Bogahawatta said the flying squad would also keep an eye on illegal constructions in and around the city.
