A newly-wedded young couple, who had been erecting a house for themselves to build up a new life, never lived to turn it into a home. Their brief journey in life as man and wife ended at St Sebastian Church at Katuwapitiya in Negombo .

The couple, Lahiru Prasanga, 34, and Diliini Sajeewanai, 34, were killed as the mass ended.

The mother in law of Dilini, Sudarshani Fernando, 55, said her son was a carpenter and was the breadwinner.

While building their new house, his wife Dilini was taking medication to help conceive a child, she said.

“I heard that a bomb blast had taken place in the church I ran there to find my son and his wife. My son was found and was taken to hospital.’’

It was in hospital that she came to know that the son’s wife also had been killed. “I found Dilini in the morgue. I identified her from her bracelet and her clothing.’’

She said that the two people who cared for her have left her alone in the world.

Mrs Fernando said the government must take full responsibility for the murders. The Rs 100,000 aid given is no compensation for the loss, she said.
