Environmental pollution

As we all know, environmental pollution is the biggest issue which the whole world is facing as a challenge nowadays.
The natural environment contains everything required for the survival, growth and development of living beings on earth. But we see that the technological development and unethical activities of humans has made the environment become more and more polluted.

This happens due to the mixing of dangerous, unnatural materials into natural sources such as the water, air and soil which causes an imbalance in the eco-system. This leads to various health hazards for humans and animals. This is all because of the industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, technological advancement, overpopulation and modern lifestyle.

All these are the main reasons for the increasing level of toxic gases that mix into the air and cause air pollution. According to the WHO around 6.7% of all deaths worldwide are due to the air pollution. Environmental pollution is a small and slow poison which is disturbing all living beings. It is not easy to stop it at once. However it’s not so tough to prevent it gradually.

So my dear friends, we should understand the importance of the environment in which we live in and respect nature. Let us join hands together and take individual steps like simply planting a tree for the next generation and try to stop environmental pollution.

Water
Water is very useful to us. We get water from lakes, rivers, wells and taps. Plants and animals need water to live.
We use water for drinking, cooking and washing. Water has no colour, shape or taste. World Water Day is on March 22 every year. We must save water for the future. Water is a gift of nature.

Save water, it’s precious!
Water is the main living thing humans, animals and plants need to survive. If we do not drink enough water then we can get dehydrated. People can also die due to lack of water.  Water can be used for drinking, cooking, rafting etc. Water can be very useful at times, for example if there is a fire, you can cool it down by splashing a bucket of water.

We should never waste water. We should always think of the people who do not have enough water and save water.
Do not forget that water is precious!

Water
Water is our lifeblood. All living beings need water. We can’t live without water, so water is very important. We get water from wells, rivers and streams. We use water for drinking, cooking, washing, bathing and cleaning. We use water for agriculture also. The people in the dry zone face many difficulties to find clean water.
We should not waste water. We should not pollute waterways also.

Trees – a valuable gift of nature
Nature provides for man in many ways. It gives us fresh air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, shelter to be safe and many more resources and services. Nature gives all this in many forms. Out of those, a very valuable and precious source is the tree.

Trees are of many shapes and sizes. In Sri Lanka they can be found almost everywhere you look. From forest and jungles, to towns and cities, trees can be found in abundance. They provide us with a most essential resource for life; oxygen. They help maintain the water cycle. They supply us with fruits, leaves, medicines and oils. Even when they are cut down, they are equally useful as when they are alive. They provide timber for furniture and construction purposes.

Despite helping man so much to an extent that our entire lives depend on them, man in return shows no love towards them. Forests are diminishing fast. Due to this, the amount of tree goes down and doesn’t rise again.

Although most people don’t value trees, there is a handful of people who acknowledge the value of trees. Governments must protect trees by having awareness programmes, setting up reserves and making laws for the protection of trees. We as individual citizens must also do something that contributes to safeguarding trees. There are many ways to do so and we can also motivate family and friends.
If everyone protects trees, there would be a massive change. So, save yourself by saving trees.
