The suspect driver of the defender vehicle involved in the hit-and-run accident that led top the death of  Borella Traffic OIC Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra, will be produced in the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for an identification parade.

Bambalapitiya Traffic OIC, Sub Inspector (SI) R.S.K. Ranatunga, told the Sunday Times that several witnesses to the incident will be present in court to identify the suspect, while police will also reveal details obtained from CCTV cameras.

Meanwhile, police have initiated special security measures in areas such as Bambalapitiya and Kollupitiya, where a majority of nightclubs are situated to prevent people driving under the influence of liquor or drugs.

Police will also carryout checks to identify vehicles posing as “fake VIP convoys” that drive around Colombo at night with flashing lights.

Investigations are also being carried out to determine the past record of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run accident. According to SI Ranatunga, inquiries conducted so far have revealed that the vehicle had originally been purchased by a former Major General in the Army. It had thereafter passed through three other owners. Police are trying to determine whether the vehicle has been illegally reassembled or modified.
