Nadun Guruge, acting Commissioner General of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), has written to the Business Times with reference to last week’s story under the above headline. The letter says:

“The IRD categorically rejects the allegations made in the said article which are baseless and factually incorrect. It is regretted that the article has been published without verifying the facts from the IRD.

With regard to the penalty cases mentioned in the article, the IRD assures that all penalty calculations are done by the RAMIS in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Inland Revenue Act, No 10 of 2006.

It is regretted to mention that this is not the first occasion that your newspaper published baseless and factually incorrect news articles with regard to matters relating to IRD and RAMIS. Thereby the damage caused to the image of the IRD and the genuine taxpayers’ faith on the RAMIS is irreplaceable, and ultimately adversely impacts on the Government’s tax revenue.”
