LAWASIA, an international Legal body of Lawyers, Judges, Jurists and Legal organisations, is to undertake an urgent fact finding mission by eminent Legal personalities to Sri Lanka, as the country is experiencing a Constitutional crisis in its 70-year-long democratic history.

The undertaking was effected this week after a delegation of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) moved an urgent resolution at a meeting held in Siem Reap, Cambodia, with the participation of all the Bar Presidents and their representatives from some 40 countries, including China, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, England and the United States.

The resolution, moved by alternate country Councilor Sunil Abeyratne, was passed unanimously by the representatives, while expressing serious concerns on the current situation in the country, with the swearing in of a new Prime Minister recently. It has also urged that Parliament be convened immediately.

The resolution notes: “LAWASIA shares the concerns of the BASL with respect to the current situation in Sri Lanka and likewise urge the various authorities, institutions and parties to uphold the Rule of Law and the provisions and the Constitution of Sri Lanka,”
