The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) last week questioned the fate of 4.3 million Uniform Vouchers (UV) printed by the last government, with photographs of the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) previous administrators, to be distributed to schoolchildren in the government schools.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said UVs for 2019, planned to be distributed in the 2nd week of November, bears the pictures of President Maithripala Sirisena, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, former Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and State Minister Radhakrishnan.

Now, with the sudden change in the administration of the country, the CTU questions how the printed UVs could be distributed. “It will be interesting to see what will happen,” he said. Last year, similar UVs to the value of Rs 2,450 million were printed and distributed to 14 categories of students including the pirivenas.

The CTU said that, if the government had continued to issue uniform material instead of UVs this problem would not have risen. “We intend to request the MoE to return to the supply of uniform material to schoolchildren from next year,” he said. - CC
