Prof. T. Jogaratnam, Emeritus Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Peradeniya passed away at the age of 88 on Tuesday.

Prof. Jogaratnam was a pioneer in the field of Agricultural Economics and is considered the ‘Father of Agricultural Economics’ in Sri Lanka.

He graduated with honours in Economics from the University of Ceylon. He joined the academic staff of the then University of Ceylon in 1953 to teach courses in the economics of agriculture. He obtained his M.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto and earned his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University in 1968.

Prof. Jogaratnam was appointed founder professor of the newly created Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management of the University of Peradeniya in 1972. He later became the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture. He was the second Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA). He was the founder President of the Ceylon Agricultural Economics Society in 1968. He was the Patron of the Sri Lanka Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA). During his career, he taught and mentored many generations of students and was much loved and respected by all.
