Three abandoned baby elephants, found in the Eastern Province within the span of a week, are being cared for at the Ampara wildlife health unit.

The unit’s veterinary surgeon Dr Nihal Pushpakumara said the calves were found roaming in Kopawali area in Trincomalee, Maha oya area in Ampara and Dammina walamandiya area close to Maduru oya.

The baby jumbos are eight, five and three years old, he said.

Dr. Pushpakumara said they were being treated for minor injuries and will be soon sent to “Ath Athuru Sevena” the elephant transit home at the Udawalawe National Park.

He also said that requests have been made to the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) to turn the Ampara wildlife health unit into an elephant conservation centre.
