301 suspects detained over Kandy violence

Police have so far arrested 301 suspects connection with the recent bout of violence in Kandy. Of the suspects now being held, 196 are from the Kandy District.
Out of the total, 168 suspects have been arrested under emergency regulations imposed on March 6.

Meanwhile, the Government announced that from Monday, it will begin paying compensation to people affected by the violence, while a cleanup of the area is now being undertaken by the army.

Several ministers will work together to provide compensation payments.

The Security Forces Headquarters (Central) has been given the responsibility of rebuilding and renovating all damaged properties in Digana, Akurana, Galaha, Katugastota, Menikhinna, Ambetenna, Poojapitiya, and a few other places in the Kandy District. The army team is headed by Major General Nissanka Ranawana, general officer commanding the 11th Division.

Money from the President’s Fund has been pledged to repair damaged buildings.

COMPLAINTS CHANNELS
The Ministry of Law and Order has announced several channels for public complaints on any form of surveillance or harassment.

The ministry said it has learnt of “alleged incidents of harassment and illegal surveillance of the public including human rights defenders and victims of human rights violations including members of the families of missing persons.’’

It also said: “The Government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens at all times, and will ensure that any incident brought to the notice of the Sri Lanka police is treated with utmost seriousness and investigated in keeping with the applicable laws.’’
