Over 19,000 new Teachers this year

This year the Ministry of Education (MoE) intends to recruit over 19,000 teachers, including graduates, for both, National and Provincial schools islandwide, said a senior MoE official. Most of them, 4,658 will be GCE Advanced Level qualified teachers. Of them, 1,360 will be assigned to National schools while the rest will be appointed to Provincial schools.

The MoE will recruit 1,362 graduate teachers under the programme and another 1,500 graduates to teach in the Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums. An additional 2,804 teachers will be recruited to serve in Tamil schools. Another 1,165 teachers will be recruited to the Provinces where Provincial Council (PC) approval has been granted. These are Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western PCs.

The other categories of recruitment will be teachers for Technological subjects.  Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that, for some of the placements, interviews have been scheduled already, and the recruitment process completed as soon as possible.
