Bonus marks at term tests for excelling in sports: MoE

View(s):

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has instructed school Principals to award extra marks at term tests to students who have excelled in sports related extra curricular activities. The MoE said this move was to encourage students to participate in at least one sport while in school, and is to be implemented in both National and Provincial schools.

At present, Principals have been sent guidelines on how to add marks at Term tests, based on sports achievements. This decision was made following the MoE’s instruction for schools to allocate sports activities to all students, based on their initial performance. The marks for sports achievements will be given in colour codes, and is for both indoor and outdoor games.

“Students who have scored low at studies during Term tests, but have been involved in sports and won many sporting events, will be given additional marks at the test,” the MoE said. “At present, schools are more focused on passing students but give less priority to sports. This has resulted in lack of leadership, teamwork, confidence and other soft skills. This decision has been made following an increasing trend in non-communicable diseases such as obesity, among schoolchildren,” the MoE said. - DW
