Let’s protect public property
Public property belongs to all of us in general. Most people have not realised the value of public property. Misuse of public property has become a national defect of the Sri Lankans. Examples of public property are temples, churches, kovils, post offices, libraries, buses, trains, telephone systems, electricity, irrigation systems etc.
If we protect public property, it can be used not only by this generation but also for future generations. Using public property carefully saves money.
We should always think that public property belongs to us and that we are the community of our country. If we damage public property, we do harm to ourselves. We only waste money that could be used for other development work.
We should protect public property for the younger generation. It is our duty. We should always think of others. Then we can develop our country day by day.

The day I went to the zoo
I went to the zoo with my mother and father. We went in a taxi. We got tickets for the zoo entrance. When I entered the zoo, I saw swans and zebras. I saw crocodiles, fish and tortoise in the water.
I saw snakes, giraffes, elephants, camels, monkeys, donkeys, deer and rhinos. The tiger and lion were in a cage. I took photos of the animals. There were little pigs.
I played on the swings. The monkeys were fun to look at. I had a nice day. I love the day that I went to the zoo.

An interesting trip
Deserts are the earth’s driest places. I thought that it is very difficult to live with hot sun and sand. But I was wrong. We visited Qatar, a country in western Asia this winter. It was full of flowers and full of grass and trees.

Before the discovery of oil, the economy of the Qatari region was based on fishing and pearl hunting. Qatarians love their King. When I visited Qatar, there were flags, banners and stickers with the king’s face on buildings, cars and beside the roads, to show their gratitude towards the king. The religion in Qatar is Islam and Arabic is the official language.

We went to Doha city to visit the parliament. It was very big and beautiful. I learnt of the Qatari history by visiting the Museum of Islamic Art. Souq Waqif is a theme village that displays ancient Arabic culture. We visited parks, the beach and architectural buildings.

We visited the zoo and the seaside. We went ice-skating and also had a gondola ride inside a big shopping mall.
I need to thank Vas Punchi who gave me this wonderful trip to celebrate my 10th birthday. I wish her a happy and long life and to get well soon after her surgery.

Goodbye, Rudy
My father had found a stray, malnourished, pathetic looking ugly pup on the street one day. And he had brought him home and cared for him. Then it had grown into a cute, healthy looking pup that no one believed had been a street pooch.

He was very fierce towards strangers and turned out to be the best guard dog we ever had. He loved our family very much. I can remember him waiting for me at the front door every day when I come home from school. And he had a special greeting for us whenever we returned home after going out.

As he was getting older, his eyesight turned poor and he could hear only slightly. Still he would recognize us from our voices and our scent. We were very sad to see him getting weaker bit by bit as he was ageing. Finally, he refused to eat even his most favourite kinds of food such as yoghurt, fried-rice and hoppers. It was heart breaking to see his last moments. While my mom was feeding him with liquid glucose, his breathing stopped.

It was a very sad moment which made all of us cry. A friend, a pet, a protector left us after fourteen years of service. I miss you Rudy. Goodbye, until we meet again!
