In addition to the adverse weather conditions which has wreaked havoc in the country’s south, we also witnessed several major accidents including a vehicle pile-up not usual in the country.

At Welgama in the Matara district a van ran off the road on Wednesday causing a pile-up of four 3-wheelers, six motor cycles crashing into each other and leaving several persons injured.

On Thursday, 25 persons were injured when a bus plying from Kataragama to Colombo crashed onto a tree.

And on Friday two buses crashed head-on at a bend along the Tangalle-Gandhara Road, leaving 19 persons injured. The accident occurred when a bus carrying a load of holiday-makers which was travelling on the wrong side of the road crashed head-on into another bus.

According to police the bus had skidded off the road during bad weather at the time.

Police have advised motorists to exercise extra caution when driving during adverse weather conditions.
