Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Lanka Power Boat Association (LPA) hosted an international power boat competition in the waters of Bentota last week.

This is the first time Sri Lanka staged an international power boat racing event of this caliber, which was recognised by the Union International Motonautique (UIM). Founded in 1922, UIM is the world governing body for power boating, which governs all Power boating disciplines worldwide.

Sri Lanka had a rare opportunity to see some of the world class drivers in action in the sea and in the lagoon of Bentota. It was noted by some drivers that they have not seen such a unique location for speed boating where the lagoon and the sea was in one place to host an international event of this nature. 32 drivers from 5 European countries took centre stage in their Thunderkats and Formula 2 power boats. The event was launched from the Sri Lanka Tourism Resort in Bentota. Avani Hotel provided all the logistical support including accommodation for the drivers and officials from UIM and LPA.

“Events of this nature bring international recognition for Sri Lanka and are in line with the strategy of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau to bring international sporting events to Sri Lanka in order to promote the country as a destination for sports tourism,” said Minister of Tourism Development, John Amaratunga.

“Our country is blessed with diverse locations suitable for a variety of sporting activities and speed boat racing is just one of them. We are thankful that the Finance Minister in his budget proposals has recognised this aspect and we are looking forward to hosting quite a few high profile events over the next 12 months,” added Minister Amaratunga.

‘’We are very happy to collaborate with Sri Lanka Tourism to enhance the Sports Industry by introducing Sports tourism to the country, by hosting international sports events of this nature and highlighting Sri Lanka internationally as a sports destination as well’’ said Minister of Sports, Dayasiri Jayasekera.
