The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) yesterday rescued a seven-member crew of an Indian merchant ship that was sinking in the southern Indian Ocean.

Medium scale Indian merchant vessel ‘Maria Lurudaya’ was bound to the Maldivies when it suffered a mechanical failure mid sea.

The Maldivian govt. informed the SLN of the vessel in distress and the SLN had sent out an alert to all ships and boats in the southern seas to look out for the ship.

A crew on a multi-day fishing trawler ‘Sahan Putha’, fishing in the area, had spotted the craft and informed the SLN.

The vessel was 68 nautical miles south of the Galle lighthouse.

The crew found floating adrift in a light craft near the Galle harbour, were rescued by the SLN’s Fast Attack Craft P490, dispatched for the rescue.

The sailors will be handed over to the Indian High Commission for repatriation.
