The University of Visual and Performing Arts in collaboration with the SAARC Cultural Centre will be holding the ‘Saundaryabhimani’ Art Festival and the SAARC exhibition of paintings this week. The SAARC exhibition of paintings will showcase art from the eight SAARC Member States – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while Saundaryabhimani will feature Sri Lankan art, music and dance.

Vice Dean of the Faculty of Visual and Performing Arts Professor Ariyarathne Kaluarachchi stated that the event is an exciting step for the university. “We took part in the exhibitions of other universities but did not have one of our own. In 2014 after I became Vice Dean we held a successful kala ulela (exhibition of the arts) titled Saundaryabhimani. When we were discussing how to improve the event this year the Director of SAARC Cultural Centre Wasanthe Kotuwelle invited us to hold an exhibition through our two organisations,” he said, explaining how the festival came about.

Deputy Director (Programmes) at the SAARC Cultural Centre Kishani Jayasinghe-Wijayasekara says that the SAARC Cultural Centre is excited to partner with the University of Visual and Performing Arts. “At the SAARC Cultural Centre we deal with art and culture of eight countries of the SAARC region and we deal with the most beautiful part of life. We get to tie people together with a mode of expression which is very tolerant and gratifying and expressive,” she said, adding that around 150 paintings selected from a pool of 300 paintings from all over the SAARC region will be exhibited, with at least a few paintings from each nation.
