Sri Lanka has been too late in adopting the green building construction concept whereas Europe and some other countries have significantly adopted this concept was the view expressed by Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development.

He was addressing the inauguration of the Construction Expo 2017 held at the BMICH last week which went on for three days.

This exhibition is an annual event, organized by the Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB), and provides a showcase for the latest construction technologies, machinery for the builders, professionals and traders.

He cautioned that at the rate they are moving the earth simply cannot be sustained, because within the coming years, mankind and nature would run out of resources needed for survival. Therefore, he said that it is essential that people adopt the green building construction concept. He said that their planning should not disturb the natural habitat surrounding them and should have least impact on the wildlife and environment.

Prof (Ms) Chitra Wedikkara, Chairperson, Organising Committee, Construction Expo 2017 said that this exhibition is a precursor for the World Construction Symposium and said that CIOB educates the Sri Lankan builders as to how they could face the new challenges confronted by the construction industry such as the climate change, and changes in the human desires.  For this purpose, she pointed out that they are required to explore new innovations to overcome these challenges.
