The Monetary Board (MB), with the concurrence of the new Finance Minister, has promoted Assistant Governor, K.D. Ranasinghe to the vacant post of Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CB) with effect from April 30.

This follows the April 30 retirement of S. Lankatillake from the post, and dilly-dallying for weeks by the Ministry in approving the MB’s nominee for the post amidst speculation that the terms of both Mr. Lankatillake and Deputy Governor P. Samarasiri, due to retire on August 18, would be extended. These developments have been reported by the Business Times since end April.

CB union sources said that both were seen as close to former governor Arjuna Mahendran.

Mr. Ranasinghe has nearly 31 years of experience in the CB especially in the areas of economic and price stability, and other agency functions. Prior to the appointment as a Deputy Governor, Mr. Ranasinghe held the position of the Assistant Governor in-charge of Statistics, International Operations, Domestic Operations, Employees’ Provident Fund, Human Resources and Facilities Management Departments.
