Bringing fitness to your doorstep

Fitness has become one of the main goals of today’s generation, especially the millennials. When someone talks about fitness, gym and training, the basic understanding of a layman is that it’s all about bodybuilding, lifting weights, body bulking, building muscles etc.

Isuru Fonseka and Natasha Fonseka, CEOs and founders of fit.lk see it differently : they are looking to bring about a unique lifestyle of personalised fitness training.

The main focus of fit.lk is on fitness and not bodybuilding, stresses Isuru elaborating that most gyms in Sri Lanka have the equipment for training and bodybuilding with well-trained instructors who would prepare a standard schedule for their customers either to lose weight or gain weight and muscle.

Fit.lk on the other hand is a group of six personalized trainers, specialized in different segmentssuch as aqua fit, explosive fit, triple fit, core fit, cardio 360 and combat cardio. The mobile fitness training is provided at the customer’s desired venue rather than in a typical gym environment. Group training is also conducted at different locations such as the Sinhalese Sports Club or at a corporate site by advertising through social media channels.

Natasha said since the company’s inception in 2014, they have learned through their clients that most professionals feel uncomfortable about training at a stereotype gym. They want  personalized training at their home or some other convenient venue. On the one hand some people don’t want others to know that they get trained and on the other hand they want to get into good shape before joining a gym at a later stage.

The fitness culture is not exposed to its full potential in Sri Lanka, noted Natasha adding that fitness instructors are not well-paid to do the job the gym management requires them to perform.

Most importantly it’s the initial relationship a fitness trainer builds with the customer that leads to a great fitness physique and results, stressed Isuru. “It’s not just a physical fitness training, we as trainers provide our customers, but a training that is physically, mentally and spiritually connected. A personalised fitness trainer must build trust with the customer and be open with them to understand what they need,” he added.

He also mentioned that there are three types of customers that he has come across while training a gamut of professionals. People who do the training following whatever the trainer asks them to do; those who question how and why they should do a particular technique; and those who question the end results they will see after doing a particular technique. It’s good to question how and why a workout would help them to become fit, he says.

“We suggest a minimum of six months to our customers to train them and allow them to have a deeper understanding of their body and how they could adapt to the training techniques. Most people continue even after the six months plan is over and some people work on their own after six months,” stated Isuru.

In today’s busy lifestyle, finding the time to hit the gym is a dream that doesn’t always come true for most people. Getting a personalised fitness trainer to your doorstep is much more convenient, flexible and offers the privacy most people desire and that is what fit.lk is primarily focused on.
