Students passing out of both state and private medical universities are set to be delayed due to the ongoing protests over the SAITM issue.

Pasan Hewawasam a representative of the Professors of the Medical faculty of Ruhuna said that Act 16 examinations (now known as ERPM) for students from the Kotalawala Defence University and students graduating from foreign universities will not be held until government resolves the SAITM issue.

He said medical faculty students island-wide had refrained from attending lectures for the past three months and this had affected the final examinations which were to be held in November this year.

“Due to the postponing of the final exams there won’t be any interns in government hospitals next year,” he added.

He emphasised that until medical students attend lectures, the Act 16 examinations will not be held under any circumstances.

“The exams were scheduled to be held on the 15th, 17th and 22nd of this month, but until a solution is provided, the exams stand postponed”.

Dr. Hewawasam said representatives of both the Medical Specialists Association and the Federation of Faculties of Medical Teachers’ Association are involved in preparing, correcting papers and tabulating marks.

“Since they have refused to participate, there is no way in which we can conduct the examinations,” he said adding the exams are postponed until further notice.
