A Pakistani was arrested on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday, after the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) found more than five kilos of heroin in his possession, police said.

PNB Officer In-charge T. Ludowyke said the man was arrested when he was seen behaving in a suspicious manner in the lobby area of the airport after passing customs.

He said they opened the suspect’s suitcase that appeared to be innocuous but exuded an odd smell. They cut open the interior and found a rubber sheet fixed on to it.

“Officials of the police then cut the rubber sheet and found 5.5 kilos of heroin,” he said.

The suspect identified asAhamad khurarran Shazad had flown from Islamabad to India and over to Sri Lanka.

Police said the suspect would be produced in the magistrate courts.
