NMRA to get teeth to slash prices of drugs

Under a gazette notification that will be published soon the National Medicinal Regulatory Authority (NMRA) will be granted powers to bring down prices of pharmaceutical drugs, Health Ministry secretary Anura Jayawickrema said.

He said a formula to bring down the prices was presented by the NMRA in December last year –and it was signed by Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne in May this year.

The regulation when gazetted will empower the NMRA to revise the price of drugs that have shot up drastically in the recent past.
The Sunday Times learns that the NMRA has forwarded a formula to revise the pricing of pharmaceutical –drugs.
