Former Rivira Editor identifies alleged assailant from Army MI Unit

The Army intelligence officer alleged to have taken part in the assault on former Rivira editor Upali Tennakoon, was identified at an identification parade held on Friday (26) at the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court.

The suspect, Premananda Udalagama, formerly of the Army’s Military Intelligence Unit was identified by Mr Tennakoon and his wife, as one of four men who attacked them on January 23, 2009. Mr. Tennakoon was on his way to office that day, when four men on motorbikes had blocked the path of his car and assaulted him. He was hospitalised as a result.

The suspect is also alleged by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to be involved in the murder of former Editor of the Sunday Leader newspaper Lasantha Wickrematunga on January 8, 2009. He is further alleged to have been involved in the abduction of Mr Wickrematunga’s former driver. Gampaha Additional Magistrate Lalith Kannangara remanded the suspect till August 29 in connection with the assault case.
