Pakistan Army men and women beat Lankan counterparts at Volleyball

The Pakistan Army team and the Army Women’s Corps won the Men’s and Women’s titles at the Sri Lanka Army Inter-Regiment Volleyball Championship 2016, ended on Friday at the Maharagama National Youth Centre Indoor Stadium.  The visiting Pakistan Army team secured the Men’s championship with an overwhelming victory of 3-1 against the SLLI team after an exciting battle which brought amusement and delight. Pakistan Army players and the SLLI and the Sri Lanka Service Corps respectively received championship, first runners-up and second runners-up trophies in the Men’s segment of the tournament. The Sri Lanka Women’s Corps (SLAWC) volleyball team, SLAWC ‘B’ and Sri Lanka General Service Corps teams respectively won the championship, first runners-up and second runners-up trophies in the Women’s segment of the tournament.

The Sri Lanka Army Inter-Regiment Volleyball Championship 2016 was organised by the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force where a visiting Pakistan Army team also vied among the participating teams.  Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Commandant of SLAVF attended the occasion as the Chief Guest. SLAVF Deputy Commandant Brigadier W.H.D. Mahanada welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival. SLAVF volleyball players in Regiments and Corps including Women Corps, entered the fray in the tournament with enormous interest and dedication from last Monday.  Similarly, two SLAWC and six SLAWC teams won the championship and the runners-up trophies respectively in the Inter-Unit Netball Tournament, held at the same venue on Thursday, with the participation of Major General Channa Goonetilleke as the Chief Guest.

The closing ceremony of the volleyball tournament was attended by Colonel Mohammed Rajil Irshad Khan, the Defence Attaché at Pakistan High Commission for Sri Lanka, Eranda Velianga, the Director General of National Youth Centre in Maharagama, Major General (Retired) W.D.L.P. Wickramasinghe, the former Deputy Commandant of SLAVF, Deputy Commandant Brigadier W. H. D. Mahanada, the Principal Staff Officer Brigadier K. Prematilleke, Directors, Regimental Centre Commandants, senior officers, other ranks and a large gathering of volleyball fans.  - SP
