According to police reports, during the past few weeks there has been an increase in the number of accidents in the Nuwara Eiliya district. More than 50 accidents have been reported in the Hatton area including Maskeliya, Norton Bridge, Hatton, Nallathanni and Ginigathhena

A total of five persons have died and around 50 people were injured in accidents.

Negligence on the part of drivers was a leading cause in the spike of accidents. Driving under the influence of liquor, high speed driving and mental fatigue were contributory factors.

Police sources added, the thick fog, the rise in the number of visitors during the April Nuwara Eliya season, a lack of experience in driving on upcountry roads and mental exhaustion too contributed to the rise in the number of accidents. These sources said a number of accidents were also caused by drivers who did not hold a valid drivers licence.

In a seperate incident at Badulla a container collided with a three wheeler and a stationary car at a railway crossing causing a disruption in rail services.
