The heat wave experienced throughout the country is no closer to ending. With little rain expected until May and temperatures set to climb even higher in April, there is no relief in sight.

Whereever one goes, the effect of the oppressive heat can be seen and felt. Doctors have advised people to drink a lot more water than usual these days and to limit physical activities. Those finding themselves outdoors in the daytime are advised to take plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. It doesn’t always need to be water; king coconuts and natural fruit juices are perfect for such days.

Animals left out in this heat are often neglected, and it was heartening to see some people taking water in containers to quench the thirst of these  hapless creatures.

The heat is such that umbrellas have become a must for many, while walking barefoot in the temple is akin to walking on a bed of hot coals. The greenery is slowly vanishing in Colombo’s heat while the Galle Face Green is mostly deserted.

Indeed, it’s got to a point where even the lightest of showers would be most welcome.

Even indoors it’s difficult to keep the heat at bay
